Data privacy and personal information protections are a being introduced by government and regulatory authorities to afford individuals greater control over their information as the digital domain proliferates. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became effective in May 2018. It serves to provide European Union citizens with control over the use of their personal information. California has passed the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which becomes effective January 1, 2020, to provide similar personal information rights to California residents.
