GlobalFoundries Gets Out of Market for 7-Nanometer Technology

GlobalFoundries is throwing in the towel on its 7-nanometer manufacturing process. The company announced on Monday that it would cut short its development of the new technology, highlighting the mounting challenges on the leading edge of the chip business. The move leaves Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, Intel and Samsung to fight it out at 7-nanometers.

The retrenchment came only months after Thomas Caulfield replaced Sanjay Jha as chief executive of the world’s second largest contract maker of chips.
