NEC demonstrates 5G face recognition system

January 17, 2019

NEC has completed a proof-of-concept demonstration of a 5G-based facial recognition system that can be temporarily deployed at event venues without the need for new cable installation.

The prototype system was tested at NTT Docomo’s 5G Open Lab in Okinawa as part of the operator’s 5G Open Partner Program, which seeks to encourage the creation of new 5G use cases.

The system utilizes 5G and mobile edge computing (MEC) technologies to enable instant face recognition using mobile networks.

In order to optimize bandwidth, monitoring cameras can stream low definition images when people are not detected, and high definition images when certain behaviors are detected.
