Digital experience monitoring (DEM), a type of network monitoring, is gaining attention for the insight it can provide into how networks and applications are functioning. It is applicable for use with IoT digital endpoint interfaces with controllers as well as to human interaction with applications.

DEM combines the following technologies:

  • Real user monitoring (RUM), which monitors real user transactions to detect slowness and changes in performance
  • Endpoint monitoring (EPM), based on software that runs on the endpoint as an agent or a within browser
  • Synthetic transaction monitoring (STM), to measure application request responses from endpoints or from monitoring points scattered across the global Internet
