Case Study: Miami-Based Company Thwarts Toll Fraud Hackers

A study conducted by the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) in 2013 states that toll fraud costs global businesses $46.3 billion per year; a 15% increase from 2010.  Direct Fragrance, a Miami-based distributor of imposter and designer fragrances, is no stranger to this activity and has had several incidences in the last five years of their PBX being breached.

“We discovered the [breach] because we were receiving strange voicemail messages that were blank.  It seems the hackers were setting up mailboxes and generating calls to those mailboxes,” recalled Jennifer Davila, Assistant Manager of Operations at Direct Fragrance.  “Luckily, we caught it before the charges were too high and added the password protection we needed.  Then a year later, it happened again.”
