T-Mobile Launches 5G Network for Autonomous Shuttles in Jacksonville

In a groundbreaking move, T-Mobile has rolled out a private 5G network in Jacksonville, Florida, specifically designed to support a fleet of autonomous vehicles under the city’s Ultimate Urban Circulator initiative. Managed by the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), this ambitious project aims to integrate autonomous shuttles into the city’s current transport framework, extending its existing automated light railway system known as Skyway. The initiative is being carried out by Miller Electric Company, introducing entirely autonomous, bus-shaped shuttles designed to transport passengers along a three-mile route extending from EverBank Stadium to the newly developed waterfront area.

These high-tech shuttles will leverage T-Mobile’s private 5G network, supported by key vendor partners like Dell, Ericsson, and Nokia. The robust 5G network is essential for providing critical two-way communication, IoT telemetry data, and seamless audio and video feeds between the autonomous shuttles and a central command center. According to T-Mobile, opting for a private 5G network over more traditional solutions such as Wi-Fi ensures greater reach, reliability, and scalability, which are crucial for managing a fleet of autonomous vehicles efficiently.

Autonomous Shuttles for Urban Transport

The initiative’s primary objective is to make autonomous shuttles operational by mid-2025. This marks the first phase of the three-phase Ultimate Urban Circulator project, intended to lay the groundwork for future expansions and extensions that will eventually connect more neighborhoods. High bandwidth and low latency are critical components necessary for real-time video surveillance and two-way communication, enabling these shuttles to navigate safely alongside regular traffic. Craig Bowman, director of technology at Miller Electric, emphasized the vital role of 5G technology in this context, pointing out its unparalleled capabilities in supporting sophisticated autonomous systems.

Bowman noted that 5G’s high bandwidth ensures that large amounts of data, including real-time video feeds, can be transmitted quickly and efficiently, which is essential for monitoring and controlling the shuttles. Moreover, the low latency of 5G networks is crucial for enabling near-instantaneous communication between the shuttles and the central command center. This real-time communication is necessary for the shuttles to make quick decisions and navigate safely in a dynamic urban environment, where they will interact with both pedestrians and conventional vehicles.
