O2 Germany, a division of Telefónica, is making strides to enhance its rural 5G coverage to improve connectivity in underserved regions. Recently, it activated over 1,600 improvements and around 100 new mobile sites, delivering high-speed connectivity to previously underserved, sparsely populated areas like Wingst in Cuxhaven, Oberelsaff in Neustadt (Wied), and Freilassing near the Austrian border. From January to March, approximately 500 new 5G transmitters were added, resulting in over 97% population coverage across Germany.
Major urban centers such as Berlin, Munich, and Cologne, as well as rural areas such as Königsfeld in the Black Forest and Bad Staffelstein, have also seen significant enhancements. Additionally, O2 improved network capacity at around 1,000 mobile locations to further enhance service quality. Alexander Seitz, Director of Regional Planning, highlighted the critical role of strong networks for Germany’s future, emphasizing better connectivity along transportation routes for increased convenience and reliability.
The company’s 5G network upgrades include reaching standalone speeds of 1.7 Gbps by aggregating four spectrum bands. This move showcases significant advancements and highlights O2’s commitment to expanding high-speed connectivity throughout Germany, ensuring seamless and robust services for all its users.
