Taara, an initiative by Alphabet’s X division, has partnered with Digicomm International to further develop its Lightbridge technology, which utilizes optical communication for delivering high-speed internet. This collaboration is set to broaden the reach of Lightbridge, with Digicomm’s expertise in distribution reducing the time for deployment, particularly in regions where traditional cabling is difficult. Lightbridge’s capability to deliver internet speeds up to 20 Gbps over distances of 20 kilometers makes it a viable solution for both urban and rural areas in need of reliable connectivity.
This innovative partnership highlights a move toward achieving digital equity by offering an easily scalable and quickly deployable internet solution. With traditional methods facing challenges, the partnership aims to bypass these with its advanced fiber-over-the-air technology. Taara has also showcased a silicon photonics chip employing an optical phased array, which could significantly enhance data transmission efficiency. This development is projected to be integrated into their offerings by 2026.
Additionally, Taara has made strides as an independent entity, with ventures like the aerial connectivity project in collaboration with Vodafone. This project utilizes drones equipped with Taara nodes to deliver swift communication solutions during disaster scenarios. CEO Mahesh Krishnaswamy emphasizes the importance of rapid testing and deployment as central to their strategy for global expansion.
